[00:01:21] Speaker B: Anna, thank you so much.
[00:01:26] Speaker A: Thank you so much for being here.
[00:01:28] Speaker B: Thank you.
[00:01:31] Speaker A: So in your perspective, what is the best piece of advice you would give to someone just starting out in your industry?
[00:01:39] Speaker B: You know, one of the most important things I think is to know how to relieve and release stress.
Having been in this business for 30 years, the single biggest obstacle to success that I can think of isn't so much the competition or the economy or interest rates or any of that. It's really how do we stay healthy and how do we stay creative and strong.
And that really boils down to releasing stress, learning how to release stress. Because if we don't learn how to do that, sooner or later stress will release us.
It'll render us incapable of doing our jobs.
So I think if there's just one thing I wish I had learned much earlier in my career, is what is a very effective, easy, quick way to release stress when it happens in the moment.
[00:02:33] Speaker A: Wow.
I absolutely love this. Nobody has come to this show to say learn how to release stress. And it's very true.
When you're starting or even when you're not starting you're business, stress is something very real. And I really like what you said about how the biggest obstacle is not money. It's not stability, it's not. It's not anything out from outside of you. It's how you handled yourself in those situations that's key.
[00:03:07] Speaker B: The problem with so many of us, we try to all of the ways that we're taught to relieve stress really don't relieve stress.
So, you know, take a vacation or, you know, and there's a lot of unhealthy ways to relieve stress. Drinking or smoking or eating or spending. You know, there's so many ways that actually make stress worse.
So yeah, I would say to know a way that really works and that's not unhealthy. That'd be the first thing I wish I had known 20 years ago.
[00:03:41] Speaker A: I think that. Well, a lot of people try to release stress with external band aids like you mentioned, drinking, taking a vacation, I don't know, whatever that's external, but working in, in themselves and trying to fill the cup from inside and to release it from inside.
What would be an advice that you would give to people to learn how to release stress in a healthy way?
[00:04:11] Speaker B: Absolutely. You know, one of the techniques that we teach in our Burnout Breakthrough program, first and foremost is a practice called the R and R technique and which stands for relax and release. But basically, the science of recovery from burnout and preventing burnout comes down to the ability to release stress in the moment as you experience it.
That works. What doesn't work, and what most Americans try anyway is that we work for 50 weeks and then we take two weeks of vacation and that does not work.
It's a nice idea, but it simply does not work. The science doesn't bear that out. What really does work, however, is to release stress in the moment as you're feeling it.
So the RNR technique that we teach in Burnout Breakthrough is a five second vacation.
And what we ask our clients to do, and it's very, very simple and easy to do, is just to recognize in the moment I'm feeling stressed, I'm feeling overwhelmed. You don't have to understand why. You don't have to figure it out. You don't have to. And in fact, trying to figure it out will make it worse.
All you have to do is to recognize in this moment, I feel overwhelmed.
Scan your body and notice where in your body the tension is.
And then take a deep breath in through your nose and a deep breath out through your mouth and allow that stress to leave.
This is what stress is meant to have. Only a 90 second cycle.
It's not meant to be a perpetual state. If we get, you know, if you're driving a car and you almost get in a car wreck because someone is running a stop sign. It's a very short cycle and your blood pressure will go up, your, your heart rate will go up and it'll have a beginning and a middle and an end. But it's only meant to have a 90 second cycle. But what we tend to do, unfortunately, especially sort of high performers in business, is we think we have to stay at that state or always all day long. And that will ultimately lead to burnout.
So yeah, that's one of the techniques we found is the most effective. Take a mini vacation, you know, as many times during the day as you need. It takes five seconds to do it. And all you really have to do is just notice that you're feeling uneasy or overwhelmed or uncomfortable.
Inhale, exhale, and let it go. And if you do that as many times as you need to every day, you stand a very good chance of not only preventing burnout, but recovering from it if, if you're going through it.
[00:06:49] Speaker A: This is super interesting and yes, it's very real what you, what you mentioned about here in this American culture, we work all year long and then we take a one week vacation or I've seen people who are always, you know, like longing for a mirage. The mirage of, oh, I'll get a two day break, I won't do anything. But that's, that's not, I will say, not real. It's, it's just a mirage, you know.
[00:07:21] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:07:22] Speaker A: And this technique of, of that you just shared of recognize that I'm feeling stressed and take a five minute, five second vacation feels more doable, even though maybe it's easy to say but not easy to implement.
What would you tell those people who are perpetually feeling burned out and stressed now that we know that it's like a 90 second cycle?
[00:07:59] Speaker B: Well, the problem is that most of us have become successful by staying in a perpetual state of stress and overwhelm.
You know, we tend to be perfectionists and we tend to be people who, who have very poor boundaries. We tend to say yes when we should have said no.
And you know, unfortunately or fortunately, this tends to lead to success. If you have any talent at all, if you're a perfectionist and you never say no, and you're willing to go to any length and work harder than anybody else, and if you have some talent, you're going to be rewarded in the marketplace and you're going to achieve a level of success that is higher and you'll achieve it faster than most other people. So it's not that it doesn't work. It really works. The problem is that at some point, most of us discover, and often in our 40s, it depends on. I find there's a correlation with. With when you have. If you have children in your house.
But in any case, one day we wake up and we realize, oh, my God, I am so exhausted. I expected to wake up this morning refreshed, but I woke up this morning exhausted. And if you do that a couple of mornings in a row, you begin to realize, you know, this is not working, and you begin to worry. I wonder if I can go into work today. I am so exhausted.
I have to go to work. Whether you lead the business or you have a high role in the business, I have to do this. I have to get up and do this. But if you have this profound exhaustion day after day after day after day, which I would say is the hallmark, by the way, the key symptom of workplace burnout, you begin to wonder, I don't know if I'll be able to do this anymore. And that's usually the moment of truth where we begin working with our clients, where they realize everything that I've tried. All of my superpowers of working harder and worrying more have taken me to this place in my career, and it's worked. Why isn't it working anymore? Why isn't my magic wand working anymore?
And it's when people hit that place that they're open to some ideas that are a little bit different than the things that they've tried in the past.
[00:10:14] Speaker A: I wish everybody could listen to this episode with you, because I know that everybody has been there, and I think that a lot of people are experiencing burnout, imperfectionism, which I think also comes from other places of maybe not feeling worthy.
[00:10:43] Speaker B: Yes. Yes. There's a whole. You know, I mean, the whole problem with this is that people who. Who don't feel worthy work harder.
Right. And the. And the illusion is that they'll fill up that hole and they'll feel worthy or they'll feel good.
And you kind of do momentarily, and you receive accolades one way or the other, whether they're financial accolades or professional accolades or recognition or praise.
And the problem with that superpower is that it ultimately turns to kryptonite for most of us, many of us.
Because if that's what's fueling us, if the whole. If what's fueling us and propelling us is to try to avoid the feeling of not feeling good enough, sooner or later our brains are so smart. Our brains know that's what we're doing. If we try to avoid anything, our brains are very, very smart and know we're trying to avoid it. It's very much like, don't think about pink elephants. Don't think about pink ele that actually tattoos pink elephants on your brain. And it's very similar, you know, if we try to.
Don't think about feeling like an imposter. Work harder. Work harder, and don't think about being an imposter actually makes us feel more and more and more like an imposter.
So fortunately, there's another way, although it's quite counterintuitive. We call this process burnout breakthrough. And it really, really works. And it works very quickly and. And it works permanently to remove burnout and. And actually to give you a much better way of life without sacrificing success, you can be every bit as successful, if not more, actually quite a bit more successful. But without dying on the vine with burnout.
[00:12:29] Speaker A: What are the components of that burnout breakthrough?
[00:12:36] Speaker B: Our. Our program is.
Well, I'd add a couple of. A couple of things that your. That your listeners can do very easily.

I guess. The thing I'd really like to leave with your listeners. This almost killed me. Burnout almost killed me.
A serial entrepreneur. I've launched 10 businesses and sold eight of them.
And this was a point in my life where I was so burned out, I was really afraid that I just couldn't get out of bed anymore. And I stumbled into a process out of complete necessity that's now worked for thousands and thousands of business owners. You asked about who we serve and basically we serve entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs and their leadership teams who are just reached the point where they're exhausted.
And the good news is that you can really quickly, within five to ten days, you can really turn the exhaustion around and also the mindset that's negative and resentful, you can turn that all around both at work and at home in a very short amount of time.
[00:15:45] Speaker A: That's awesome.
