[00:01:26] Speaker B: Thanks Anna. Thanks very much for having me. It's great to be here.
[00:01:29] Speaker A: Awesome to have you here. So what is the best piece of advice you would give to someone just starting out in your industry?
[00:01:36] Speaker B: Wow, that's a, that's a big question, Ana. And certainly, you know, it makes me sort of step back and pause and think. And you know, as you said in your introduction, you know, I had this beginning part of my career, this great part of my career where I was working in professional sailing and designing sailing boats and working with really high performing teams.
But when I was out sailing, one of the really cool things that I loved to do was to navigate, to be the navigator on a boat. And I trained for that very early on in my sailing career.
And so to answer your question, in terms of what's a really great piece of advice? Well, it's about navigating.
To me it's this idea of like, where are we trying to get to, Right? Because I can't navigate a boat unless we set a destination. It's the same thing in my business.
If we don't know where we're going, how are we going to come up with a plan to get there? Right? And Yogi Berra has this great quote which is if you don't know where you're going, you might end up someplace else. Right.
When we go in our car, we can't just put in the GPS in the car and say, I just want to drive around. Right. We've got to put a destination in there.
So my, my biggest piece of advice is to have a vision to figure out where is it that I want to get to in 2025. Right. To be able to kind of place that, that flag, that marker at the end of the year and to, to be able to look at it in terms of business. Right. Maybe, or maybe it might be more personal things, but what is it that you want to achieve in 2025? And now we can talk about how to break that down and back it up and make a plan from that.
[00:03:26] Speaker A: I love that. Without a direction, without it, let's call it a North Star, we will get anywhere. So I think that putting a destination on it, and I'm going to say it like this, if I tell you, let's go take a road trip, you will probably ask me, yeah, where?
I don't know, let's go somewhere. It's, we will end maybe, I don't know, somewhere not nice. But if I tell you, hey, let's go to Disneyland, let's have a road trip to Disneyland. We'll, we know where, where we're heading to. We know maybe the high end goal and just to break it down into, I don't know, shorter goals maybe. But I guess that I'm going to come back to something that you said that I think is very important is to ask ourselves, what do you want?
What do you really want?
[00:04:23] Speaker B: Exactly. Yeah. And so when I'm working for myself to plan my year and where I want to get to, and also when I'm working with my clients, I'm always sort of looking at, yeah, what is it that you want? And that can be a very large question. Right. It's sort of like it's where do you get started in trying to answer that question?
So at a first level, one of the things that I work on for myself and I help my clients on is, okay, let's break it down into three main areas.
Let's break it down and look at what I call energy.
You know, like, how are you feeling? Right. And then what do you sort of want? Right. Right from the year? And of course, here we are in January recording this podcast.
And you know, it's the 21st of of January today, but you know, everybody, there's a sort of traditional Thing people started their New Year's resolutions, I want to get fit, I'm going to stop drinking, I'm going to lose some weight. You know, all of these sorts of things around their energy.
And then of course, the, the, the devastating statistics are that by the 10th or 11th January, last week sometime, most people had given up. Right. Anyway, so where do we want to get to with our energy then as a next sort of point to look at as a topic, work, right.
The things that we are doing with our business. Right. So looking at the business, is there a revenue thing that describes sort of where it is we want to get to with the business? Is it numbers of clients as a number of locations? Like, how can we sort of really make that idea of where we want to get to with a business a little bit more tangible? Like, what does it look like?
And then I think a really important thing to also look at as a sort of a third, you know, top level topic is how are you doing with your relationships now? I'm a business coach, right. I'm an engineer. I've had this career with sailing and things like that. So why am I talking about relationships?
Well, every business, you know, thrives on great relationships. You know, the connections that you make, you know, if you're in a business with employees or partners or other people that you're working with, like, those relationships are so key and important to where we want to get to with the business and then, you know, personally, Right.
How are personal relationships going? Because we can get really busy in the business, right. And as a driven entrepreneurs, like, it's very easy to kind of get sucked down that rabbit hole of I just got to do more in the business, I just got to work harder. I've got to go here. Do these meetings work all weekend?
Well, where are you going to get to at the end of the year with your relationships? If that's what you do? Right.
Chances are you might get to the end of the year and find you've toasted your relationships. And then you know that that doesn't bode well for a more sort of holistic vision for the year. So that's why I start off saying, where do you want to get to with your energy? Where do you want to get to with your work? Where do you want to get to with your relationships? And to be looking at all of those things and figuring out, you know, what is it we want and then how do we kind of balance those things together?
[00:08:00] Speaker A: I think that you broke it down beautifully. Like, first realize what do you want, where do you want to be? And then take care of your energy and your work and your relationships. And I love that you said that every business thrives on great relationships and connections because that's how you start doing business with someone with the like and trust factor.
And also you mentioned the work relationships and the personal relationships. And I would like to add one more kind of relationship, which is the relationship with yourself.
[00:08:33] Speaker B: Oh, true. Yeah, absolutely. Yes. And I think, you know, this is a key part of the coaching that I do. It's a very good point that you're raising, Anna, which is about how do you see yourself? You know, what's going on inside? And mindset is huge, right? Because I see this working with, with my clients, with these leadership teams is.
It's the things like the imposter syndrome coming up, right? I'm not good enough to be doing this.
You know, I, I see people who, you know, are making important, weighty decisions in their business and then they're lying awake at night. Did I make the right decision?
Am I the right person to be making these decisions? Right. Just sort of like that self talk, which is not useful. And we call these things saboteurs, right? This, this, this talk track going on in the head that's, you know, self critical, beating yourself up, you know, feeling those, you know, feelings of shame and other things like that about, you know, stuff we've done in the business.
How you see yourself, your mindset, in your relationship with yourself is huge.
Because in the work I do, we can look at shifting those things. If we can see those things, right? If we can get a little bit of a step back, a little bit of distance and we can see that I've got a top track going on in my head that's not helping me, that's sabotaging me in fact.
And then we can shift, we can actually, there are, are frameworks, there are tools that I use in my coaching that help that shift to what we call a sage mindset. You know, because we do have wisdom, right? We do know when we tap into trusting ourselves, trying to tap into our intuition, trusting our gut, that we can employ wisdom and look at different ways that we can be more productive, right? We can make better decisions. We can have our stance set to be able to really see and interact with the world in a more beneficial way.
[00:10:50] Speaker A: Love it. So Steve, tell us about who you serve and how people can reach out to you.
[00:10:55] Speaker B: So great question, Anna. I have two different types of clients that I work with.
First off, I start off I work with leadership teams of small to medium sized entrepreneurial businesses.
So very typically these are a lot of say, construction businesses, you know, marketing businesses, technical businesses, IT businesses.
And I work with the leadership team to help them figure out where is it that they're going with their business, you know, what's the vision, how are we going to get there, get some discipline and accountability, get some traction going in the business to do the things that we say that we're going to do and then work together as a healthy, functional team. Right. Because as we talked about, it's all about relationships.
So that's one set of clients I work with. I also work with driven entrepreneurs on an individual, one on one executive coaching modality.
So as I've sort of talked about here, we're really looking at what's the mindset, how are you showing up, what's going on with your energy, what's going on with how you're looking at your work, you know, how are you doing with your relationships and looking at the things that we can shift.
And so all of that to say you can find out about all of this on my website, Steve Morris coaching.com and I've also got some free things on that website.
One of the most important things I start working on with clients is how you start your day because I truly believe if you can start your day on a more productive way, then you can have a better day. And so I've got a course, a free course on my website called creating your morning of distinction and this is a 10 part course. It takes less than an hour to get through so there's just little bite sized pieces to truly help you start your day from a more creative, beneficial way to be able to move forward.
