Paul is a fractional CXO and AI driven automation expert, transforming SMBs with innovative procurement and supply chain solutions. Doctoral candidate and strategic consultant for efficiency and growth. So Paul, welcome to Big Ticket Pros. [00:01:02] Speaker B: Hey Anna, thank you for having me. [00:01:04] Speaker A: Thank you so much for coming. What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone just starting out in your industry? [00:01:12] Speaker B: Great question. So as a consultant in specifically in the procurement function and with the focus on automations and implementing AI into businesses, I have to say that my industry is fairly agnostic. Right. So when I talk about advice, the advice is generally for any entrepreneur, any startup, any founder. I mean, it really has to do with agility, Right. I like to think of a business as molding your child for those of us that have children. And you're molding them to be, you know, good upstanding citizens. And when you're building a business from the ground up, it's important to work on the business and not just yourself, right? And so you're molding the business. Constantly pay attention to the needs of the business and not just the needs of the owner. Although you are driving the return on investment yourself. Structuring the organization appropriately and continuing to be agile and adaptable is really a way to secure, you know, continuity. Right. It's a way to ensure that your business is able to compete now and in the future. And unfortunately, if you don't work on that, you'll get left behind. [00:02:26] Speaker A: This is interesting to me when you say work on your business and not your. Just on yourself. And that to me sounds like the chicken or the egg kind of question because I, I find it interesting because I haven't seen it like that, like working your business and not just on Yourself, like, yes, working in business. But if you're not okay, anything, like everything else around you cannot be okay. [00:02:53] Speaker B: Sure, sure. And you, you actually hit on a really interesting paradigm. And when you talk about the chicken or the egg, you know, when you're a business owner, you have to think about what your value proposition is and what's driving that roi, Right? It's that value proposition. And your goal as a business owner should be delivering that value proposition as much as possible. I mean, I hate to simplify it so much, but if you're able to do that, then you're getting your roi, you know, as quickly and as fast as possible. And when you're not looking at the business in that way, what you tend to do is bog yourself down with all these mundane tasks and daily activities that can really be sidetracked, you know, can sidetrack you, especially if you're like me, you know, and you're all over the place anyways. It can sidetrack you from, you know, you know, delivering that value. You end up doing things that aren't supportive of bringing the money in. Right. I mean, let's be honest. The ultimate goal is to get money from something's pocket into your pocket. Right. So you have to be doing that activity as much as possible if you want your business to succeed. [00:03:59] Speaker A: Succeed, yeah. And I think that ties to the other thing that you mentioned, that you need to be adaptable. [00:04:06] Speaker B: Absolutely. [00:04:08] Speaker A: Business changes. We need to pivot fast sometimes. [00:04:11] Speaker B: Yeah, Well, I mean, 100% right now is a. I mean, I'll tell you, I. Someone way smarter than me in a company, way bigger than mine, said that we're witnessing 30 years of technological change in, in three and, and I believe it, right? You think about all the different tools that are so niched out that are available to us for each specific function or document, translation or anything, right? The digital world is wild. And when you think about it in that concept, these new tools that are becoming available, don't just adopt them because for the sake of adopting them, right. Think about adopting it for the sake of what is it going to do to drive value? What is it going to do to drive ROI in the business? And again, that mindset coupled with the agility allows you to creatively solve problems and continually basically provide the dynamic value that the market is constantly seeking. I'll lean on my scholarly works. And one of the prevailing theories and business strategy is dynamic capability. All that means is effective organizations are structured in such a way that they can take advantage of opportunities when. When they need to be seized. Right? So as a small business, as a business of 1 to 50, even 500, 5000, you still have the, the upper hand in agility, right. And you need to be strategically agile when you're making decisions about building the business so that you're getting that roi. [00:05:46] Speaker A: How can you develop that skill set to be strategically agile? [00:05:51] Speaker B: Well, I mean, children help without, you know, even if you don't want to develop it, children help because they are kind of the walking essence of that. Right? They're agile, they're moldable. But and honestly, they're curious. Right. Being curious about tools, being curious about doing something differently and more effective is probably the most paramount thing, in my opinion, in discovery. Right. In discovering new avenues to provide that value. And, you know, curiosity can be learned from a lot of things, but for me, it's getting into these new tools that are available, doing the Trials, spending the 20 minutes to see what this has to offer and genuinely, you know, exploring and learning from it and peeling back the layers of the onion. A couple, a couple layers of the onion and thinking, well, in what ways could this help me differently than how I'm approaching today? Right. And it's fundamental to, to be able to capture that, that market. Right. [00:06:55] Speaker A: I like it. I like that, that spend the 20. Just be curious about the tools and how they can make you effective and discover the new avenues to provide value. And I think most people right now, some, some of the people don't want to spend time learning something new because, you know, this is how we've been doing it or this is how it's done. But sometimes something new will get you faster and more effective. And then spending 20 minutes to exploring and learning and then applying to it might bring so much value to your life. [00:07:36] Speaker B: Yeah, I mean, I can speak from example, right. I spent 20 years in the corporate procurement function in Fortune 500s. And what really hurts is when you're. You're talking about the same topic and seeking leadership approval, you know, for, I will say, a process or something, and you're doing it for months on end and, you know, you can get into the nitty gritty details, but we all know the spot where you get only so far. There's just not much else that can happen. As smaller organizations, you don't have that hurdle to jump over. Right. And simply because you don't have it, that should be enough for you to say, okay, that's time that I have in my pocket right now to use on these new tools that I could implement without those hurdles. Six months down the line without having to spend six months on thinking about implementing it even. Right. So it's about again, time and when you're doing things to focus on your business and free up your time to drive more value add, you can also start thinking about improving your businesses as value add itself. Right. What you're doing differently is a part of the value you're delivering. [00:08:47] Speaker A: Yes. Super interesting. So Paul, tell us about who you serve and how people can reach out to you. [00:08:55] Speaker B: So I serve again, I'm agnostic to industries with automation and AI. There's a lot of tools, right, and, and options out there to, to really support all kinds of different functions and, and you know, requirements of businesses. But in general I see that retail service industries, right, are very keen and need this kind of help because they're the, the small business owners that wear that hat and do all the work. Right. Or do all the work themselves. But when people want to get a hold of me, they can find [email protected] or, or on LinkedIn Paulot. [00:09:37] Speaker A: Perfect. So we're going to wrap it up here.
